Ireland, from DETE's own lists
Can this job get an Irish employment permit?
Type the job. We look it up on the two lists DETE, the Irish government department that issues employment permits, publishes: the Ineligible Occupations List and the Critical Skills Occupations List. You get DETE's wording for that job, word for word, with any exceptions. Both lists are downloaded from DETE every day.
How to read the answer
What DETE says about each list
Critical Skills Occupations List
Occupations listed on the Critical Skills Occupations List are highly skilled professional roles that are in high demand and the required skills are not always available in the resident labour force. Occupations on this list are eligible for a Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) and include roles in areas such as medicine, ICT, sciences, finance and business.
Ineligible Occupations List
Ineligible occupations are those with evidence suggesting there are sufficient Irish and EEA workers to fill such vacancies. Employment permits are not granted for these occupations.
On neither list
Every other job in the labour market that is not listed on the IOL is eligible for an employment permit. For these occupations, the employer is required to undertake a Labour Market Needs Test and if no one suitable applies for the job, the employer is free to apply for an employment permit. Occupations such as these may require skills of a more general nature and are eligible for a General Employment Permit (GEP).
Checked against DETE's lists, last downloaded 2 October 2026. Which occupation code a job falls under is our reading, and we show it with every answer. If the duties of the role fit a different code, the answer can be different, so check the code against DETE's list before an application goes in. Or ask us: a member of our team will get back to you.
